Keep the lifeline

19th August 2021

We are so grateful for everything you’ve done to help us during this challenging year. Your support has meant we’ve been able to continue providing vital emergency food and help to local people struggling to afford essentials against the backdrop of the pandemic.

While people need us, we’re determined to be here for them – but we don’t think it’s right that anyone in our community is struggling to afford the essentials. This isn’t the kind of society we want to live in.

That’s why we’re asking you to stand with us and help protect more people from needing the food bank’s help later this year.

More than a million people across the country say they are very likely to be forced to turn to food banks if the UK government goes ahead with plans to cut Universal Credit payments by £20 a week this October.

This will be the biggest overnight cut to social security since World War Two – for some families, it will mean suddenly losing up to a fifth of their income.

It will be a devastating blow for millions of households which are already struggling to make ends meet.

But it doesn’t have to be like this.

Social security should be strong enough for all of us to rely on when we need a lifeline – because, as the pandemic has shown us, life is full of things we can’t plan for.

This October, the government must choose to keep the lifeline and protect people when they need support, not cut them adrift.

Will you help show we need to keep the lifeline? There are four ways you could get involved right now:

  • If you have 5 minutes help us spread the word: share social media posts from the Trussell Trust and help us spread the word about #KeepTheLifeline. Follow @trusselltrust on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • If you have 10 minutes – write to your MP: lend us your voice and tell your MP why they must call on the UK government to halt the cut. Use our ready made email tool to find your MP and send them an email which we’ve created for you. It will have the most power if you are able to personalise the email with your own views and experiences. For our email tool, visit trusselltrust.org/keepthelifeline
  • If you have 15 minutes – let your friends and family know: set up a WhatsApp group with your friends and tell them about the campaign, sharing a link to our briefing so they can find out more. For draft text you can use, visit trusselltrust.org/keepthelifeline
  • If you have 45 minutes – join an online campaign event: attend a virtual event where you can hear from us on why the campaign is important and what part you can play to support it. You can be part of a movement of people focused on changing our society for the better by protecting people who most need our support. Be a part of it. To sign up, visit trusselltrust.org/keepthelifeline

Thank you so much again for all of your support.
