Pages, People and Full Plates

Imagine walking into a bookshop on Black Friday not to hunt for deals, but to the rustle of pages and the sound of neighbours chatting over their favourite reads. That's exactly what Rebecca at Night Owl Books has been creating every November for the past four years.

While the rest of the world queues and clicks, Rebecca throws open the doors of Night Owl Books and invites the community in for something altogether different. Customers arrive with copies of well-loved books, swap them for something new-to-them, and browse what others have lovingly left behind. If you've only got a few minutes, you can drop your books on the central table and take something in return. If you've got longer, you can settle in and lose track of time in good company.

And tucked alongside the towers of donated books spilling out of baskets and bags, there's a collection for East Lothian Foodbank: tins of meat and vegetables, boxes of cereal, cartons of milk and all the festive treats that make the season feel special. Things that mean everything to families who might otherwise go without.

In four years, Rebecca and her customers have collected over 500kg of food and essentials for people here in East Lothian. That's four Black Fridays transformed into something far more valuable than any deal: people choosing to stand together for their community.
